disappointed

I'm disappointed. Since Artboy had already seen the condo and thought it was pretty much all good, I was really excited to see this place. We got there early and had to drive around for a bit to find visitor parking. The couple spots we'd seen over the weekend were full, so we drove around and around, not wanting to park in someone's reserved spot. In the end, we opted to park in the reserved uncovered parking, because except for those two spots in the front, we couldn't find any other visitor parking. I made a note to ask about that.

We walked around, and saw 4 cats walking around. At least one had a collar on, so we know it belonged to someone. The others were very skinny, although they weren't very skittish. The condo was on the second level, but you enter from the ground floor, and the large window there was kind of frosted--but not on purpose. Artboy said that the guy told him the sprinklers caused it. The weather stripping at the top of the door was hanging down. And I started to think, "hmm..." The guy finally arrived, and boy did he lack personality. He looked a lot like Homer's boss on The Simpson's. Walking in, there was a small tiled area with two closets, which was nice. Then you immediately went up the stairs, which curved around, and then you were in the apartment. Aqua-ish carpet was the first thing I saw. We went to the balcony, which was to the immediate right, and there was more storage off the balcony. But the door was very warped from water damage--not a good sign. Even further, the bottom third had been cut and another board nailed to it. Which was also very warped. When we mentioned it, he said first he'd replace the door, then he said he'd just cut off the bottom again and nail another board to it. Artboy said, 'I don't think that can be salvaged," and the guy said the doors were too expensive. Okay...

We walked into the first bedroom, which was really set up as more like an office. Perfect for what we want it for. Nice size. And the master bedroom was a nice size as well. One bathroom with two sinks..a door between one sink, so you can close off the "master bath" part from the guest bath. Nice closets. Lots of closet space. Built in. SOme light switches were missing. Mr Personality had stayed in the kitchen while we were looking around, and when we made it to the kitchen, he was cleaning the fridge. There was this awful smell coming from the fridge, and he first said he'd replace the fridge. But then awhile later, he asks us if the shelves are too gross--which they were. Rusty or growing something, I couldn't tell. Plus it smelled nasty. He was trying to get out of buying a new fridge. The countertops were navy blue. Which really looked lovely with the kinda aqua carpet. Yuck! Appliances were old. There was a trash compactor. Sink drain was rusted and there had been a leak under the sink--the boards were majorly warped. But I'm still thinkin the place could work. Little red flags going off in my head, but I was ignoring them b/c I really wanted this place to work. The guy went down to his car to get the paperwork, and I'm looking around the living room, thinking, "Where on earth are we going to put the sofa and the entertainment center??" There wasn't much living space, and only one wall to work off of. If we put the entertainment center there, it might be too long for that wall...and if the sofa was in front of it, there wouldn't be enough space to walk or have a coffee table. I started voicing my concerns to Artboy, and we are standing there, discussing it. I know he really wants the place, but the doubts are growing louder and louder in my head, and I tell him I'm not ready to sign. The guy took forever coming back, and we tell him we aren't ready to put a deposit down, but that we'll take the paperwork and fax it in if we decide to take it. He tells us he's been getting a lot of phone calls on it from students, which I highly doubt--it's March. Students don't go on break until mid May. He's already told us it's been vacant for a long time, hence the smell in the fridge from sitting closed (which again, I doubt) and he brings up the fridge again. He'll buy a new one if we take it. Otherwise he's sure some students won't mind. Which is REALLY setting off some warning signals in my head. We leave, and Artboy and I go to dinner, and I start to lay out all of the reasons why I don't think we should take the place.

He listens, and he tells me I'm right. That the guy is very cheap, and it is very likely that should anything break while we are there, he won't be willing to fix it, or he'll do a shoddy job, because it's "too expensive." He tells me he is glad that I'm not just so eager to move out of my parent's house that I'll just take anything and that he is glad that I'm really thinking.

So, we're both very disappointed. We decided not to take the condo we looked at last weekend. On Monday, Artboy called the lady to let her know that we would call her this weekend to let her know if we decided to take the place. She has continued to call on a daily basis. If she's that annoying NOW, just think what she'd be like once we moved in. I mean we told her that if she had someone who wanted the place before we were able to decide, to go ahead and give it to them. And we told her when we'd contact her. Leave us alone! *sigh*

Dog sat again last night. Since Artboy has Thurs, Fri and Sat off, he stayed with me, but was in bed by 9:30pm, so I didn't get to spend much time with him. Tonight he is going out for St patty's day with a friend, and it is unclear if I'm invited. He seems to think so, but never received an answer to that question, and I don't want to be in the way. Plus, I have to get up really early tomorrow b/c I have a stamp class an hour away, and if we are taking a large van, I won't have any control over when I come home. So I continue to see very little of Artboy.

Still feeling down.
