tardiness

Well, the NR was late again..without a call, so I had to give her a warning when she finally came in. I called after 20 minutes, and then again at 9am, and she answered at 9am, saying she was sorry and she'd be right in. When she got here, she looked at me and said, "I'm in trouble, aren't I?" I told her a little, and told her to come into my office and we'd chat.

She told me that she'd stayed with a friend last night who had just found out she was pregnant and had scheduled an abortion for Friday, and she didn't hear her phone alarm. She was quick to say that she wasn't using it as an excuse--there was no excuse--she was just letting me know what was going on.

She said that she knew that this was the 3rd time, and that it looked really really bad, and I told her it did. That when she is here, we think she does a great job and that she is a big help around here, but that we need her here. I told her that she is still on probation, and that I was giving her a warning today, but that if it happened again, we would have to let her go. She started tearing up then, and apologized and said it wouldn't happen again. I told her I would hold her to that promise.

Remember that Friends episode where Chandler goes out on a date with Rachel's boss, and although he doesn't like her and has no interest in seeing her again, like a shmuck, he says, "I'll give you a call sometime,"? Well, I was feeling badly that this girl was crying in my office, and told her it was okay. I was doing so well until that moment. I'd already told her it wasn't acceptible, gave her a warning, told her if it happened again, she was gone. And then after all that, told her it was okay. *sigh* I SO need to get better at this.

Over all, though it went better than I thought it would.

Now, I just hope she keeps that promise and doesn't make me have to fire her.
