It's been a rather rough day. I haven't been feeling well over the last several days--feeling sick to my stomach--and I haven't been sleeping well, so I was very tempted to call in sick this morning when I woke up, was dead tired, and still not feeling great. But my boss isn't here today, and I knew the OA wouldn't be here today. I also knew that the NR wouldn't be thrilled to be in the office alone--if she even showed up today. She went home early yesterday because she wasn't feeling good either--she kept making long trips to the bathroom and didn't look good either. Sounded like me, but way worse. Plus, I had to send in the counselor pay so they'd be paid on time, so I dragged my butt out of bed and came into work.

Right away, I got a phone call from a hospital who said that they'd called twice but hadn't heard back from anyone yet. I apologized, saying that our pagers might not be working this morning--that I'd get ahold of the counselor by phone and have her call asap. She didn't have any pages, so I was going to send a page, and I gave her the information for her to call back.

About the time I received the answering service log by fax, our other day dispatcher, who was off today, gave me a call in a panic. She'd received 8 pages this morning from our answering service, and because she was off duty, she'd turned her pager to vibrate, so she didn't hear it go off. The answering service had goofed, and it turned out we were several calls behind...some by as much as 5 hours at this point. Ugh. She called Lisa and forwarded them to her so she could call the hospitals.

In the mean time, I was getting new hospital calls. In a period of an hour, I got 3 new ER calls and 4 floor calls. And then a larger number than usual of calls from people's family members who were trying to get their loved ones help. We'd seen one last night, had it all set up to go inpt for detox, and then he changed his mind and went home. Now he's changed his mind again and wants to go in, but all the beds are full.

Finally, it's lunch time. Dr Ass, having decided that I'm now worthy to talk to since I'm the only person here today, tells me that he has a patient coming in at 12n, and asks me to give that person the paperwork to fill out. I can't tell you the last time he's spoken a word to me, except when I happen to answer his phone and he's on it. I tell him okay, and wait until 12n so I can go eat.

Someone comes in, and I get up to give the person the paperwork, and as I round the corner, it isn't the patient--it is Artboy! With a ton of food! He'd gone and bought wings for everyone in the office today...except the others weren't here. Hehe. What a wonderful surprise..and how sweet and thoughtful of him. We ate some wings, and then went for a walk near the golf course, and had a lovely lunch. I was really touched--and I'll make sure to let everyone know tomorrow that he brought us all wings.
