Day 5 and 6
Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006 @ 8:44 pm

I can honestly say that I have never done so much walking before. Since arriving at our hotel last Saturday, we have walked everywhere. I'd love to have had a pedometer to see just how many miles we have walked since arriving here...tho then again, maybe I wouldn't want to know. :) By the time we get back to our hotel at night, my legs are tired and aching. Today, the top of my right foot was really hurting. It's a little swollen tonight. I'm not sure if I popped something the last time I twisted my foot on an uneven sidewalk or cobblestone or just what happened. I just hope it won't bother me too much tomorrow. We are going to take a metro to Union station tomorrow and go from there.

Yesterday, we went to the Concoran Art Museum. We actually had to pay to get into this museum, and there were a few pieces of art that I found interesting, but I was disappointed with most of what was there. One of the first pieces that I saw, I took a look at it and declared that it was crap. It looked like something I could do! I had to laugh when I looked at the label and saw that it was a Monet. I usually like Monet. :)

We ate at a chinese restaurant for dinner, which was pretty good. Most of the restaurants around our hotel close at 5pm, so our pickings were pretty slim.

Today, we headed towards the National Musuem of American History. This was one of the Smithsonian Museums that I was very interested in seeing, but when we arrived, we discovered that it was closed until the Summer of 2008 for major reconstructions. I was quite disappointed, but we decided to head towards the Air and Space museum, which turned out to be one of my favorite things we've done. It's the most visited museum in the world, and I can certainly see why. There was so much there, that it was almost overwhelming. Soon after our arrival, a tour started, and I'm so glad we decided to do the tour. We hit the highlights of the musuem, and our guide was great. That was a man who truly loves doing what he does. They had an entire room devoted to the Wright Bros that was scheduled to be closed by now, but they ran out of money for the next exhibit, so we were able to see it, and I was just in awe. They had the original Wright Flyer, and I just couldn't believe that I was seeing that in the flesh. Everything in this musuem was amazing, but something that really touched me was in the space side. Our guide talked about the race to space and how Russia never made it to the moon. The musuem had a bunch of Russian space artifacts from that time, which Ross Perot, the former Presidential candidate, had purchased when he heard the Russians were putting them up for auction at Christie's. He then gave them to the Smithsonian with the condition that when Russia had a place to put them, that we would give them back to the Russian's.

We bought our first gifts at that museum. Artboy bought me a space pen and I bought us our yearly Christmas ornament, a Wright Flyer ornament.

We walked back a different way and came across the Elephant and Castle Pub which was super busy and very yummy. I do have a bone to pick with the waiter who stated that one of the local beers was like Bud Light. It was way too hoppy for my tastes and definintely NOT like any light beer I've tried. But the food was excellent.

I can't believe that tomorrow is our last full day here. There is a lot on our hit list, but much of it shouldn't take that long. I want to take some pics of Union Station, the Capital and the Supreme Court. I'd like to hit the Portrait Gallery and the Postal Musuem, though we'll see if we have time. We still have to hit the Holocaust Museum. And I think we have another Art musuem on our list. We'll be able to hit a thing or two on Saturday before we leave too. Phew! I'm glad I'll have all of Sunday to rest, cause I'm going to be exhausted.

This trip has truly been a dream come true, and I'm so thankful to be here...and to have shared it with Artboy.
